Evening Technical Meeting:
GROUND ANCHORS - THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTIONS AND SOME RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Speaker: Dr Devon Mothersille, SBMA Ltd.
This presentation provides a brief overview of the current state of practice with respect to ground anchor technology. Particular emphasis will be placed on the importance of maintenance and inspections. Using relevant case histories, examples will be shown that illustrate the adverse effects of nil or poorly implemented maintenance and inspection programmes. Currently in Europe codes of practice are undergoing a major overhaul and as a consequence comment will also be made on the removal of national codes of practice and their replacement with Eurocodes and Euronorms.
Dr. Devon Mothersille received his undergraduate degree in Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Bradford, UK where he also completed a Ph.D. for his work investigating the influence of close proximity blasting on ground anchor systems in rock. As managing director of two specialist ground anchor consultancy practices: Geoserve Global Ltd and Single Bore Multiple Anchor Ltd, he has worked as a ground anchor consultant in many parts of the world including Spain, Australia, the USA and the Middle East where he advised clients on complex ground anchoring projects. These include the prestigious Diagonal Mar Development in Barcelona, the Burnley Tunnel Project in Melbourne Australia, the Wadi Abdun Bridge Project in Amman Jordan and the Doha Convention Centre Tower project in Qatar. He was deputy chairman of the International Ground Anchor Conference held in London in 2007 and currently acts as an expert witness on legal cases, as well as being an active member of two committees charged with the implementation of the new Eurocodes and Euronorms covering the design, construction and testing of ground anchors.
