Historically the central water storage for Victoria, Candowie Reservoir faced vulnerable measures when its storage capacity dropped, posing a significant threat to local communities, and requiring urgent change. By completion, Westernport Water ensured that the upgrade provided a reliable and affordable water supply through to 2055 and for future generations.
As Principal Design & Construct Contractor for the Candowie project, Geotech’s scope of works included: concrete works, both precast and cast in situ; waterproofing works; installation of a temporary cofferdam; pipe works; installation of permanent anchors using the GEGA system; and filter layer earthworks.
Geotech effectively doubled its storage capacity, increasing from 2,250ML to 4,500ML, by raising the dam wall and spillway by three metres.
Prior to the release of the publicly listed open tender, Geotech was approached to provide constructability advice to Westernport Water and designers Entura regarding the permanent anchors required to meet seismic loads on the increased height of the outlet tower. The advice was ultimately incorporated into the final design, where the anchors were relocated from within to outside the outlet tower.
