Forge Tower, Docklands

  • Building
  • Foundation Piling

A recent development in the Yarra’s Edge precinct, this 30-storey tower comprises 230 apartments and ground level retail. Located on the south side of the Yarra River between the Bolte Bridge and Charles Grimes Bridge, this part of Melbourne has historically proven to be very challenging for foundation works.

Our Role

Geotech was engaged to design and construct continuous flight auger (CFA) piles for the tower columns/cores and the lesser-loaded five-level podium. The geology of this part of the Yarra Delta zone is particularly challenging as the very weak Coode Island Silt horizon extends to 25-30m depth and the Melbourne Formation bedrock is not encountered until 40-45m. This led to some piles being constructed at depths of 51m – the deepest CFA piles constructed in Australia at that time. A comprehensive program of pile dynamic load testing verified the performance of the foundation package.

Disciplines covered

  • CFA Piling – 175 total, typically 750mm/900mm dia x 45-50m depth
  • Dynamic Load Testing (PDA)
