Located on Batman Hill immediately west of the Southern Cross railyards, One Melbourne Quarter is the first commercial tower within the new 2.5 hectare development. The completed Melbourne Quarter complex will include an additional two commercial towers, together with separate residential towers with around 1,600 apartments and an elevated Skypark – the first of its kind in Melbourne.
Geotech was awarded three stages of works for the 1MQ project, the eastern half of which spans Wurrundjeri Way.
In geotechnical terms, the site proved to be very challenging, with highly weathered volcanics across most areas. For the lighter loaded parts this strata was assessed as competent founding material, but for the main building cores the basalt needed to be prebored to enable CFA piles to extend to the Melbourne Formation bedrock at around 30m depth.
The early works for contamination removal, minor demolition, soldier pile retention, bulk excavation and shotcrete infill panels.
Design and construct continuous flight auger (CFA) piles for tower columns and core rafts.
