Flemington Racecourse Undertrack Tunnel, Victoria

  • Infrastructure

While the primary use for the Flemington tunnel is for horse access to training tracks on the inside of the racecourse, in Melbourne’s spring racing carnival the 11m wide x 4.7m high and 300m long tunnel accommodates three lanes of vehicle traffic for parking. During the tender period the Victorian Race Club (VRC) established critical construction deadlines to ensure all scheduled spring and summer race meetings could proceed without disruption.

Geotech’s role

As Principal Contractor, Geotech’s scope of works included all elements of the 300m cut & cover tunnel.

Geotech supplied and installed the sheet piles, which were driven to a depth of 25m and delivered all concrete works associated with the construction of the tunnel’s roof.

Works also included the bulk excavation of the Coode Island Silt and associated de-watering activities along with concrete and drainage works associated with the final tunnel walls and base slabs.
